Summer is officially here, and with the warm weather that sweeps into the Southeast region of the United States comes powerful thunderstorms and even tornados. Recently, the State of Georgia was hit by a series of tornadoes that left many families without power and some without homes. The after effects were dangerous and left debris, downed trees, and power lines in people’s front and back yards, rendering them unsafe.

Of course part of the recovery process that must occur is the removal, cleaning and hauling away of such debris. It is always recommended that you contact an insured yard debris removal company to do the dangerous heavy lifting for you, but as Stand Up Guys and Georgia natives, we have listed a few safety precautions below to take into account when cleaning up smaller amounts of debris in and around your home.

Ash from Fire – If your home happens to catch fire during a storm or other tragedy, you are going to want to be very careful around the ash that is created. Ash has the potential to be extremely hazardous for children and pets, and can be deadly when inhaled. Always where protective gloves and dampen any ash that you clean up, and make sure to store it in plastic bags rather than washing it into water drains, as it can pollute the local water supply.

Unstable Surfaces – Walking over unstable surfaces such as downed trees or construction debris can be potentially hazardous. If you have access to leather gloves, steel toe boots, hard hats or safety glasses, use these tools to help reduce the risk of serious injury.

Gases – Gases from fires tend to build up in small spaces, so always take caution and use your best judgment if you are intent on cleaning up these areas by yourself.
