The zoo’s history dates back to the 1930s. When the Tampa Zoo first opened, it was run as a municipal department and struggled to meet the high standards of modern zoos. In 1982, community leaders formed the Lowry Park Zoo Association and took over management of the zoo from the city. This group then changed its name to Lowry Park Zoological Society of Tampa, Inc.

Safari Lodge

Located in the Lowry Park Zoo, the Safari Lodge offers world-class animals and a unique dining experience. Guests can dine in the Great Hall, which is designed to look like an African Village courtyard. An adjacent family dining restaurant, Reilly’s Reserve, is also located on-site. Guests can rent both facilities or use one only, and a customized menu is available upon request.
