Boating

Located in southwest Raleigh, Lake Johnson Park offers a multitude of activities for people of all ages. The park contains 300 acres of land around a 150-acre lake. Among its attractions is a waterfront center. This center is open daily from dawn to dusk and offers canoe rentals, kayak rentals, a boathouse and a boat launch. In addition, there are 1.9 miles of unpaved trails.

Lake Johnson Park is part of the Raleigh Greenway system. There are a number of hiking trails that are a short distance from the waterfront center. There are also numerous picnic areas and picnic shelters.

Aside from kayaking and canoeing, Lake Johnson Park also offers several special events and classes. The park is also home to the Waterfront Program Center. This facility has a covered verandah and a deck, as well as an indoor conference room. There is also a fitness room.

In addition, Lake Johnson offers three miles of paved nature trail and five miles of hiking trails. You can also rent a pedal boat or stand-up paddle board.

Fishing

The lake offers several species of fish, including catfish, largemouth bass, bream, and crappie. You’ll also find a number of species of birds, including bald eagles, osprey, and Canadian geese.

Picnic shelters

Neuse River Greenway Trail

Located along the banks of the Neuse River, the Neuse River Greenway Trail is part of Raleigh’s Capital Area Greenway System. It is a paved, multi-use path that extends for 27.5 miles from Falls Lake to the Wake/Johnston County line. It offers scenic views of the river and wetlands.

It is the longest continuous greenway in the Triangle. The trail will connect with several Raleigh greenways including the Walnut Creek Greenway Trail, the Horseshoe Farm Park Trail and the Upper Neuse Trail. It is part of Raleigh’s $35 million Greenway program, which will add 42 miles of pavement over the next two years.

The Greenway Trail, which is open dawn to dusk, has a 10 MPH speed limit. Cyclists should be careful crossing wooden bridges. They should also make sure to carry plenty of water. If they are going to pass slower trail users, they should give a verbal warning.

The Neuse River Greenway Trail is one of Raleigh’s most ambitious greenway projects. The plan includes a 150-foot riverbank extension. It also includes 4-mile links to other greenways. Up next is JC Raulston Arboretum.
