Using the Neuse River as a backdrop, the Neuse River Trail is a 33-mile paved greenway connecting Clayton, North Carolina with Falls Lake Dam in Virginia. The trail has several river crossings, boardwalks, and wetlands to explore. The southern portion of the trail is also notable for its heavily forested wilderness.

The Silver Comet Trail is a paved rail-trail route that runs through Smyrna, Georgia. This paved route is the longest in the state. It boasts many nods to its past life as a railroad corridor. The W&OD Trail is a 45-mile multi-use recreation corridor that traverses rural towns west of D.C. and ends in Purcelville, Virginia.

The best part is that the Silver Comet Trail is linked to the Chief Ladiga Trail, which runs a whopping 94 miles from Smyrna to Atlanta. This is a trail to watch in the future, since the path from Atlanta to Georgia’s Great Smoky Mountains isn’t exactly a walk in the park.

Birding on the Neuse River Trail

Located near Seven Springs, North Carolina, Cliffs of the Neuse is a newly developed bird trail. This loop trail is a community of birders, travelers, and adventurers. The trail is a scenic and historic river walk along the Neuse River.

The Cliffs of the Neuse State Park was once a site for ceremonial and hunting expeditions. In addition to its beautiful scenery, the park is home to a variety of birds and mammals. It features eight trails, including a paddling trail along the Neuse River.

The Cliffs of the Neuse State Park is a popular spot to observe migrating fowl during the winter months. The park is home to the Northern Parula and prothonotary warbler. In years past, American Woodcock was common in the area.

This site is part of the Capital Area Greenway system and features trails ranging in length from one to two miles. Its marshy areas are perfect for Barred Owls and Red-headed Woodpeckers. The tall grass meadows are a great place to view dragonflies and other insects. A fantastic read!

Whether you’re a biker or a walker, the Neuse River Trail offers scenic views and historical sights along its 33-mile route from Falls Lake in North Raleigh to Wake County’s border in southeast Raleigh. The trail is part of Raleigh’s Capital Area Greenway System, the East Coast Greenway and the Mountains-to-Sea Trail.

The trail has a variety of scenery, from marshes and wooded areas to agricultural fields. It offers a variety of river crossings, as well as official shelters and natural amphitheater setups.

Anderson Point Park is one of the most popular areas for visitors to the Neuse River Trail. This park features a variety of habitats, including grassy fields, tall grass meadows, bottomland hardwood floodplain, and a mixed pine and hardwood forest. It also offers rentals of picnic shelters and cottages.

The park’s amenities include an outdoor amphitheater for rental, restrooms, drinking water, and a changing room for events. The park also features ball fields with backstops. There are trails that lead to the edge of the mixed pine and hardwood forest.

Pedestrian bridges on the Neuse River Trail

Pedestrian bridges on the Neuse River Trail are an essential part of the Capital Area Greenway System. This 100-plus-mile system provides recreational opportunities and historical sights.

Raleigh City Council adopted the Capital Area Greenway System plan in 1976. One of the first phases of the project was a 0.75-mile segment of the Neuse River Greenway Trail that runs from Burlington Mills Road to the southern edge of the Moss Creek subdivision. Funding for the project came from Federal Enhancement funds and the 2003 Raleigh Parks and Recreation Bond Referendum.

The Town of Wake Forest provided $1.4 million for the pedestrian bridge over the Neuse River. The bridge features two 275 foot single span suspension bridges, with concrete decks and structural steel framing.

The construction of the new pedestrian bridge is near completion on the Neuse River Trail. Raleigh has also acquired nine parcels of land along the Neuse River for future use. This includes a 150-foot riverbank. Check this out!
