DSNY vs private carters
DSNY, which collects and disposes of garbage and recyclables, has plans to restructure its commercial trash collection. Currently, trash from 100,000 businesses in the city is moved to private transfer stations. However, there are inefficiencies in the system that make it expensive.
DSNY uses semi-automated front loading trucks to collect trash. It has hired consultants to help develop its plan. The plan is aimed at decreasing waste disposal, vehicle miles traveled, and greenhouse gas emissions. The plan is expected to be enacted in the spring.
In early years, DSNY had proposed a system that would divide the city into twenty zones with three to five carters per zone. Each zone would have 3,300 to 9,800 customers. However, opposition from the City Council and the garbage industry caused a delay.
The private carting industry has been in New York since the early 1900s. Currently, there are more than 250 sanitation companies that provide trash and recycling services in the city. However, only the 20 largest companies generate 80 percent of revenue. See next.
